BBI Brandenburg International Airport Berlin Info
This site contains important information about Germany´s capital new airport, BBI Brandenburg International Airport Berlin, scheduled to open in June 2012.
The airport is being built at the current site of Berlin Schönefeld Airport (Flughafen Berlin Schönefeld) in Schönefeld and once completed, will carry the name of the former Mayor of West-Berlin and chancellor, “Willy Brandt” (Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg “Willy Brandt”). Also it’s official 3-digit airport code will change from BBI to BER as the former is already taken up by an airport in India. Schönefeld is situated just outside Berlin bordering Brandenburg, the state that surrounds Berlin. The new airport will serve both the capital and the surrounding area and is planned to become a major air hub for Central and Eastern Europe as well as Russia.
Berlin has traditionally always had 3 airports but BBI Berlin-Brandenburg International will replace all of them. Tempelhof Airport was shut down first back in 2008, to be followed by the closure of Berlin Tegel Airport in 2012. The current terminals at the airport in Schönefeld will also be closed when the new terminal and infrastructure to the south are completed, in the process BBI Brandenburg International Airport Berlin will become Germany´s third busiest airport. As it happens, only the current southern runway (which will be the new northern runway for BBI) will be used as part of the new airport operations. As is now, flights between midnight and 5am will be banned due to noise control regulations.
